What is the Número de Utente?

The Número de Utente is your unique identification number within the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS). It is a fundamental document for anyone residing in Portugal, even if you have private insurance.

You need it to:

• Access public doctors, specialists, and hospitals.
• Get subsidized prescriptions from public doctors.
• Receive vaccinations and other public health services.

Who is Eligible?

Generally, anyone legally residing in Portugal can obtain a Número de Utente. This includes:

• Citizens with a Portuguese residence permit (Título de Residência).
• EU/EEA/Swiss citizens with an active S1 form (portable healthcare entitlement).
• Citizens with a valid work contract and social security registration (NISS), even if the residence permit is pending.

Required Documents

Gathering these documents beforehand will significantly speed up the process. Always bring originals and a set of photocopies.

Step-by-Step Process

You obtain your Número de Utente at your local Centro de Saúde (Health Center) or USF (Unidade de Saúde Familiar). Find your nearest one by searching online for “Centro de Saúde [your city/freguesia]”.

1. Gather Documents: Collect all required documents listed above (originals and photocopies).
2. Visit your Centro de Saúde: Go to the administrative reception desk during their opening hours. Arriving early can save you time.
3. Make Your Request: Inform the staff you wish to obtain a *Número de Utente*. You can say: “Gostaria de obter o meu Número de Utente, por favor.”
4. Present Your Documents: The staff will review your paperwork and enter your information into the system.
5. Receive Your Number: You will usually be assigned your Número de Utente on the spot and receive a paper slip with the number.

What to Expect After

• Temporary vs. Permanent: You might initially get a provisional number. Once your residence permit is definitive, you can update your file at the Centro de Saúde for a permanent status.
